In buildings of longer spans or where a new building is extended from the existing old building, an expansion joint is to be provided all round and filled with a movement accommodative polysulphide or polyurethane sealant, to ensure that cracks do not take place. In case of failure of these joints, rain-water can enter through these and cause damage.
